We often get calls from grandparents asking ‘how do I get to see my grandchildren?’.  Although most of us would acknowledge the importance of the relationship between children and their grandparents (and I am a grandparent), the law does not offer them the same rights as its does for parents.

Grandparents can apply for a Child Arrangements Order (clarifying who the children will live with, who they will see, etc) if the child has lived with them for an extended period of time, or they can apply for a Guardianship Order.  But in most cases, where the grandparents are being denied time with their grandchildren, they will have to seek the permission of the court before they can make an application.

This is where mediation can be so very effective.   It gives parents and grandparents the time and space to work out their differences, without the formality, time delays and cost of the family court.  It gives people the opportunity to express their concerns, talk about how they feel about the things and come up with a joint plan to give grandparents and children the quality time they need spend with each other.

If you are involved in a family dispute, and you think mediation might help, we’ll be happy to discuss your case and talk through how it might be resolved.
